Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball hosted Adrian College to begin the second round robin of MIAA conference play on Saturday. The Scots were able to pull off a late comeback, snagging a four point win.
The Scots took an early lead in the game, with
Breckyn Werner converting on the first offensive trip of the game for the home five. A game that many thought would be even coming in turned out to be just that. The teams battled to 9-8 score in favor of Adrian, with the Bulldogs finishing on a 4-1 run to lead 13-9 after the first.
Opening the second quarter, Adrian tried to pull away early. The visitors opened 17-11 lead, only for the Scots to storm back on a 16-5 run and take the lead at 27-24 with three and a half minutes to go. After the Bulldogs cut the lead to one, the Scots were able to hold their advantage at three points. The halftime score was 29-27 in favor of Alma.
Adrian was a team on a mission in the third quarter. The visitors outscored the Scots 10-4 in the opening half of the frame, leading by four with 5:34 to play. They would have led by more if it weren't for a pair of
Reagan Thorr baskets that tied the game at 37-37. Despite this, the Bulldog surge continued, and the road team led by as much as eight in the quarter. An
Emmerson Goodin last second make brought the gap to six after three quarters, at 48-42.
In the fourth quarter, Alma struggled initially to chip away at the Adrian lead, which hovered around seven points. However, the tide turned when Bulldog fouls started to catch up with their starting five. One starter fouled out, and the Scots were quickly in the bonus as well, chipping away at the Adrian lead. Finally, a
Molly Deurloo free throw gave Alma the lead for good at 57-56, and the Scots rode that momentum home to a 60-56 decision.
Emmerson Goodin (14 points, 13 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 blocks) was the star of the show for Alma with a double-double.
Breckyn Werner (13 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 blocks) also was a major factor, posting a double-double.
Molly Deurloo (11 points, 2 assists) rounded out the major impact players for the Scots in the win.
Alma moves to 5-4 in MIAA play, and are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to The University of Olivet.
