ALMA, Mich. - The Alma College Men's Basketball team hosted the Albion College Britons on Wednesday night at
Art Smith Arena but came up short, falling 83-55 in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) matchup.
Albion came out strong, scoring at all three levels while shooting 6 for their first 8 attempts to take the lead early. While scoring from the free-throw line, the field, and behind the three-point line, Albion jumped to a 17-5 lead within the first 7 minutes. Throughout the rest of the half, the Scots and Britons traded baskets. Albion held a 38-24 lead at halftime. Albion would extend their lead in the second half, outscoring Alma 45-31. During the second half, Alma pulled together a 7-0 run from the 9:05 to 7:50 mark. This streak included back-to-back baskets by
Donovan Collins and
Raine Rodich, helping Alma close the gap to 8. Albion would bounce back and end the game at a final score of 83-55.
The Scots struggled offensively, shooting just 29% from the field in the first. Collins paced Alma with 16 points, including four three-pointers, while Rodich added 14 points and 2 rebounds.
Korbin Heitzman contributed a solid effort off the bench, tallying eight points and a team-high of nine rebounds. Despite their struggle from the field,
Josh Elliott energized the crown with a pair of two deep three-pointers. However, second chance opportunities for Albion proved decisive, as the Britons scored 17 points from second chances. The Scots won the turnover battle today and continue to fight in close MIAA games.
The Scots will look to regroup and keep positive parts going as they hit the road this weekend for another conference matchup. They face Calvin University on Saturday at 3:00 PM in Grand Rapids, MI. Alma will aim to build on their promising moments heading into the contest.
