Men's Soccer Battles to Draw Against Regionally Ranked Illinois Tech

Alma, MI – Alma College Men's Soccer earned a gritty 1-1 draw against #7 regionally ranked Illinois Institute of Technology on Wednesday, 25, 2024 at Scotland Yard.

The Scots started strong, opening the scoring in the 12th minute with a goal from Ethan Swartzentruber. Swartzentruber was played through, but the pass was intercepted by the Scarlet Hawks. Swartzentruber continued to press, won the ball, then dribbled around the opposing goalkeeper to calmly place the ball into the back of the net to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. The Scots maintained their defensive structure for the first half preventing Illinois Tech from breaking through. The Scots out shot their opponent with 7 shots with 3 on target in comparison to 5 shots with 2 on target.

The Scots dropped to ten men just before halftime, resulting in some halftime adjustments. Throughout the half, the Scots maintained defensive shape and discipline. Alma's goalkeeper, Bradshaw Uhlmann made key saves to preserve the lead. Alma kept pushing towards the goal with a few of their second half shots narrowly wide of the frame.

The eventual tying goal from the Scarlet Hawks came in the 85th minute which was well placed in the top right corner. The Scots kept fighting until the final whistle. Swartzentruber received the ball at half field, bridged a defender, then was fouled, earning the Scots a penalty kick in the final minute of play. Illinois Tech's goalkeeper made a great save denying the Scots their victory.

The Scots improve to 6-2-1 and remain unbeaten in their last six matches. They are traveling to Heidelberg University to take on the Student Princes on Saturday, September 28, 2024.
