Manchester, IN – Alma College Volleyball headed down to Manchester University for three matches on Friday and Saturday. The Scots dropped games to Manchester University and Saint Mary's (IN), and swept Franklin College.
Manchester 3, Alma 0
The Scots opened against Manchester on Friday night. Alma, working shorthanded with some regulars battling illness, dropped the opening set 25-16 after the hosts were able to pull off a pair of runs to create some distance early. Manchester would go on to win the second set 25-12, and despite Alma putting them in a hole early in the third, would work their way to a 25-22 set win to take the game.
Madison Stevenson led the way with 4 kills and 5 digs in the loss.
Madison Bott and
Katelyn Schell each tallied 3 kills.
Olivia Deeb recorded 9 assists, with
Vicky Villarosa adding 8. Each of the setters potted an ace as well.
Grace Steiner led with 6 digs.
Alma 3, Franklin 0
Alma opened Saturday with a game against Franklin College. The Scots took the opening set of the match, a back-and-forth battle that tipped Alma's way thanks to a late 5-0 run by the Scots, 25-20. In the second set, Franklin put the Scots on the back foot, leading for most of the set and pushing Alma to the edge at 24-16. All the Scots did then was score 8 straight points to level the set at 24-24, tie it again at 25-25, and win it 28-26.From there the Scots jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the third, and never looked back, cruising to a 25-10 set win, and taking the game.
It was the middles that were paying off over and over as
Callie Smith put up 8 kills and 7 aces to lead the team offensively, and
Madison Bott added 6 kills and 4 aces.
Madison Munley and
Katelyn Schell each contributed 6 kills as middles accounted for 43 of Alma's 54 points in the win.
Villarosa tallied 16 set assists, and Deeb added 9.
Madison Stevenson recorded a team high 8 digs.
Saint Mary's 3, Alma 0
The Scots took on Saint Mary's in a non-conference match to close out the day. After battling in the first set, the Scots dropped it 25-23 to open the game. In the second set, Alma kept things close, but Saint Mary's was able to nickel-and-dime their way to a 25-18 set win. In the final set, the Belles were able to put together a handful of smaller runs to work out a 25-15 set win.
Callie Smith put together another 8 kill game to lead the offense for Alma, with
Madison Munley contributing 6 kills, and
Reagan Thorr 5. Villarosa recorded 16 assists, and Deeb registered 11. It was another double-double for Villarosa as well, who recorded 14 digs to go with her 16 assists.
Alma has their home opener on Tuesday evening, with a triangular against Hiram College and Delta College on Saturday.
