Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Soccer kicked off their 2024 season with a home game at Scotland Yard against the University of Chicago on Sunday. U Chicago lived up to their billing as a team receiving votes in the national coaches top 25 poll, controlling a majority of the possession, and holding Alma in check offensively. In the end, the Maroons won 7-1.
The first half was all Chicago as they scored the first goal of the game 15 minutes in. Both teams were held in check until Chicago would again score with eight minutes to go in the half. The Scots defense was put to the test early as Chicago's advantage in possession allowed them to rattle off 18 shots before halftime.
Alma answered at the opening of the second half as
Emily Ahearn would score the team's first goal of the season four minutes in. A corner kick into a sea of players found the foot of Ahearn, who knocked the ball in through traffic to put the Scots on the board. This cut the lead to 2-1, but Chicago answered right back with three goals in the next 10 minutes of game action, making the score 5-1 with 34 minutes to go. The Maroons would tack on two more goals to bring the final score to 7-1.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Mya Pofahl recorded 9 saves on 16 shots in her first career start for Alma.
Jacqueline Daigneault and
Anna Waterstredt were each able to get off one shot to go along with the goal from Ahearn.
The Scots will be back in action on Wednesday, September 4
th against Madonna University in Livonia, MI. at 2:00 PM.
