Brandau Homers Twice as Softball Celebrates Seniors with Sweep of Kalamazoo

Alma, MI – Alma College Softball welcomes Kalamazoo College to Scots Park on Saturday to continue MIAA conference play. The Scots celebrated their senior class of 2024 with a sweep of the Hornets, winning 9-3 and 5-0.

Alma 9, Kalamazoo 3

Alma scored in almost every inning, including plating the game's opening run courtesy of a 1st inning Jordyn Porter RBI single to right field that scored Jaycie LaValley, putting Alma up 1-0.

The Scots struck again in the 2nd inning when LaValley doubled to left field, allowing Amelia Price and McKenna Salley to score and triple Alma's lead to 3-0.

In the 3rd it was Erin Longo's turn to pad the lead. Making her first career start at first base, Longo smacked an RBI single to center field to score Sydni Wolverton.

Kalamazoo got on the board with an RBI double in the 5th, and Alma responded in the same inning with a Morgan Brandau home run to place the lead right back where it was at 5-1. A Hornets error allowed another run to score in a bases loaded situation, before Julia Duncan singled to center field to make it 8-1 through 5 innings.

Kzoo scored in the 6th, and Alma clapped back with one more RBI single from Darcy Daenzer, and a Kalamazoo rally in the 7th was shut down after one run with Alma on top 9-3.

LaValley registered a 2-4 outing with 2 RBI. Porter and Price both recorded identical 2-3 games with each drawing a walk.

Mikaylyn Kenney (11-5) pitched 6 innings in the win. She allowed 6 hits and 2 runs, and struck out 7. Megan Krueger pitched 1 inning in relief, allowing 1 hit and 1 run before closing out the win.

Alma 5, Kalamazoo 0

The Scots scored in the 1st inning of game two as well, with Brandau crushing her second home run of the day to put the home team up 2-0.

The Scots DP got the job done again, doubling to left center in the 3rd, sending Duncan and LaValley home to move the lead to 4-0.

Alma added one more insurance run with a Duncan RBI single that saw Wolverton scamper home to balloon the lead to 5-0. The Scots held off Kalamazoo to win 5-0.

Duncan went 3-4 to lead the offense, but Brandau led the charge with a 3-4 outing, scoring 4 of Alma's 5 runs.

Morgan Westall (7-8) pitched 7 innings, and kept the Hornets off balance all game. The sophomore left hander allowed 5 hits while striking out 8.

Alma improves to 6-6 in MIAA play, and looks forward to a doubleheader home finale against Calvin.
