Adrian, MI – Alma College Tennis completed the penultimate game on their conference slate on Monday. Alma took to the road against Adrian, with the men falling 6-3, and women 8-1.
Men – Adrian 6, Alma 3
Adrian narrowly secured a sweep during doubles play. After winning comfortably at #1 and #2 doubles, the Scots #3 duo of
John Laxton and Tatenda Mukudu forced a tiebreaker at 7-7, dropping the final points and the match.
Leading 3-0, Alma proved a tougher opponent in singles play, splitting 3-3.
The first of the Scots 3 wins came from
August Sack. At #2 singles, Sack dropped the opening set 5-7, before winning 6-4 to force a tiebreaker, and then winning that tiebreaker 10-7.
Also winning was Mukudu at #4 singles. The sophomore handled his opponent 6-3, 6-2.
Eli Festerling picked up the final point for Alma at #5. Festerling surrendered the opening set 3-6, before winning 6-0, and 10-6 to close things out.
Women – Adrian 8, Alma 1
Adrian jumped out to a quick advantage in doubles play. The hosts swept doubles play, to lead 3-0 heading into singles competition.
The Bulldogs continued to dominate in singles play, with Alma dropping the section 5-1.
The Scots lone win in the contest came courtesy of
Kayla Weller, who won at #3 singles. After dropping the first set 6-7, Weller stormed back to take the second set 7-5, and dominated in the tiebreaker, winning 10-1 to take the match.
Jada Zerlaut nearly found victory at #4 singles, but came up just short, falling 10-8 in the tiebreaker after winning the opening set, and surrendering the second.
The Scots will close out their regular season with Calvin University, before taking part in the Olivet Singles Tournament on Saturday.
