Dumoulin and Brandau Homer as Softball Falls to Defending Champs #4 Trine

Angola, IN – Alma College continued MIAA play on Sunday afternoon in Indiana, taking on Trine University on the road. Alma was defeated by the defending MIAA and Division III Champs, 9-3 and 13-1.

#4 Trine 9, Alma 3

Trine hit the board to open the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the 1st to take a 1-0 lead. That lead held until the 3rd, when some solid 2-out hitting allowed the Thunder to score 2 more runs.

Trailing 3-0, the Scots offense sprung to life in the 4th inning. Danielle Dumoulin smacked a home run to dead center field to put Alma on the board at 3-1. A fielding error allowed Jordyn Porter to scramble home from second base moments later, and the lead was cut to 1 at 3-2.

Trine responded with another solo homer, and Julia Duncan was the answer for Alma with an RBI single to score Amelia Price.

Leading 4-3, Trine was able to break things open in the 5th, scoring 4 runs, and pile on an additional run in the 6th. When the dust settled, the final score read 9-3.

Dumoulin's homer was 1 of 4 hits in the game for Alma, who's offense was limited by Trine's pitching.

Mikaylyn Kenney (10-4) pitched all 6.0 innings in the loss, striking out 4.

#4 Trine 13, Alma 1 (5 Innings)

Game two got off to a slow start, with Trine scoring in the 1st, followed by a scoreless 2nd inning. However, the Thunder came into the game ranked at #4 in the latest NFCA Coaches Poll for a reason.

The defending Division III National Champions jumped all over Alma in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th. The Thunder offense collected 13 runs en route to a run-rule victory.

The Scots offense struggled to maintain momentum, and was held to 5 hits scattered across 4 innings at the plate. The lone run of the game for Alma came courtesy of a Morgan Brandau homer in the bottom of the 4th.

That hit highlighted what was a 2-2 outing for the Scots DP in Brandau.

Morgan Westall (6-7) picks up the loss, having started, and pitched 2.2 total innings in the game.

Megan Krueger pitched 1.1 innings in relief before exiting the game after the senior was struck by a ball in play. Westall returned to finish the inning.

Halle Mockridge pitched 1 inning in relief.

Alma drops to 4-4 in MIAA play, but remains very much alive in the MIAA Tournament race. Alma looks forward to a doubleheader at Hope this week.
