Grand Rapids, MI – Alma College Women's Lacrosse continued MIAA play on Friday evening when they took to the road to battle Calvin University. Alma was victorious in overtime, 13-12.
The game got off to a flying start for Alma, who opened the scoring at 13:34 on a
Sam Peterson unassisted tally. 6 minutes later, Peterson assisted
Kirsten Browne to double the lead, and Peterson tripled it just a minute later.
Lauren Kenny's goal at 3:23 to go put Alma up 4-0. Calvin finally broke through with 12 seconds to play in the opening period, and Alma led 4-1 after the first.
Briar-Rose Mackey found the back of the net just 30 seconds into the second quarter to put Alma up 5-1, but Calvin was far from defeated. The Knights ripped off a 3-goal run, while holding Alma in check for 6 minutes, to close the gap to 5-4. The visitors offense then roared back to life.
Joanna Scorziello scored man-up at 4:54 to pull the gap out to 6-4. Browne tallied on an assist from Kenny, and Kenny scored on an assist from Browne, and Alma carried a 4-goal lead into halftime at 8-4.
Out of the half, it took nearly half the third quarter for the back of the net to be found. At 7:35 Peterson scored to put Alma up 9-4. Calvin's offense got things figured out, and managed to strike 5 times in a row to tie the game at 9-9. Mackey's second goal of the game with 33 seconds left in the period gave Alma a 10-9 advantage heading into the fourth.
The final frame was a back-and-forth affair, Calvin scored twice to take the lead at 8:26 to play. Goals from Peterson and Browne gave Alma the lead right back with 6:30 to play. Calvin turned around and scored just 40 seconds later to tie the game at 12-12, and nobody could find a winner, so the game headed to overtime.
Both teams had a shot to win it in overtime, but each was denied by the opposing netminder. In the end it was Mackey who scored the golden goal on a free position with 47 seconds remaining in the period to give Alma the win.
Peterson finished with 4 goals and 2 assists to lead the scoring efforts for Alma. Browne and Kenny each tallied 4 point games, and Mackey's OT winner gave the freshman a hattrick on the evening.
Alexis Norko (2-0) picked up the win in relief. The sophomore netminder recorded 11 saves second half action.
The Scots move to 2-3 in MIAA action, and remain alive in the MIAA Tournament race with the win.
Alma is back at home to take on Adrian on Wednesday.
