Softball Uses Longball to Earn Split at Muskingum

New Concord, OH – Alma College Softball took to the road to face off with Muskingum University in a twinbill. Alma split the day, winning the first game before dropping the second in 5 innings.

Alma 6, Muskingum 4

Muskingum put up a trio of runs in the bottom of the first to welcome the Scots to New Concord. Alma wasn't able to answer until the top half of inning number 3, when Mikaylyn Kenney gifted herself some run support at the dish. The sophomore's first collegiate home run scored herself and Amelia Price for Alma to get the visitors on the board, trailing 3-2.

The longball did damage for Alma again as Jordyn Porter smacked a 3-run shot to left center in the 4thinning. The go-ahead bomb scoreed Lily Malamis and Sydni Wolverton along with Porter. The Fighting Muskies weren't able to make it out of the inning before Price crushed another ball to dead center to put Alma up 6-3. That was all the scoring that Kenney needed to close things down, as a Muskingum 7th inning rally was cut off at just 1 run, with Alma winning 6-4.

In addition to the offense, Mikaylyn Kenney (7-1) struck out 13 batters while allowing 6 hits in a complete game victory.

Muskingum 16, Alma 8 (5 Innings)

The home side got on the board first again in the 1st inning. Trailing 1-0, Alma got offense from the middle of the lineup. RBI singles from Sophia Somerset and Mckenna Salley saw Alma take a 3-1 lead.

Muskingum piled on 8 runs over the next few innings, and the Scots found themselves trailing 9-3 in the 4thinning. An Amelia Price 2-run homer, her second of the day, brought the score back to 9-5 in the 5th. In the same inning, Jaycie LaValley tripled to right center and scored another pair of runs to close the gap further at 9-7. LaValley scored on a Gwen Weber single to make it a 1-run contest at 9-8.

Unfortunately for Alma, the Fighting Muskie offense got red hot, and piled on 7 runs in the bottom of the 5th, and game ended at 16-8.

The Scots got multi-RBI games from Price, LaValley, and Somerset.

Morgan Westall (3-4) picks up the loss, going 2.1 innings and allowing 5 runs on 5 hits. Megan Krueger pitched 1.2 innings in relief, and Halle Mockridge pitched 0.1.

The Scots have had the second half of their Ohio trip cut short with their game at JCU canceled due to snow.

Alma is back in action at Heidelberg on the 27th.
