Tiffin, OH – Alma College Softball took their final scheduled non-conference road trip of 2024 on Wednesday to take on Heidelberg. Alma earned a pair of wins behind solid pitching and defense.
Alma 4, Heidelberg 1
Alma opened the scoring in the 2
nd inning, as
Mikaylyn Kenney grabbed the lead on an RBI single up the middle that scored
Amelia Price to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Scots doubled their lead in the 4
th inning, as Price hit a single through the left side, which was good to score
Mckenna Salley. Alma tacked on another run off a
Danielle Dumoulin RBI single as the small ball worked to score
Julia Duncan, bringing the score to 3-0 after 5 innings.
The 7
th inning featured Alma pushing across another run on a
Reneigh Sandmann double to left field, with Duncan stepping on home to increase the lead to 4-0. Heidelberg scored a run in the bottom of the inning, but the rally was cut short, with the Scots securing a 4-1 win.
The Scots hammered out 10 base hits, with Dumoulin and Duncan recording 2-hit games to lead the offense.
Mikaylyn Kenney (8-1) pitched all 7 innings to earn a complete game win. She struck out 9 while allowing 4 hits.
Alma 3, Heidelberg 2
Alma scored first again in the second game, but it took the Scots until the 5
th inning to break the 0-0 tie.
Emily Dimock earned what would be the game winning RBI when she hit into a fielders choice, and allowed
Jordyn Porter to score, making it 1-0 Scots.
The visitors struck again in the 7
th inning, when a
Mckenna Salley RBI single scored Porter again. Moments later, Alma had the bases loaded and cashed in on it.
Reneigh Sandmann reached on an infield single, and Salley scored to bring the score to 3-0.
Heidelberg scored a pair of runs in the 7
th, but once again the hosts rally fell short, and Alma ran out with a sweep.
Reneigh Sandmann was the offensive leader for the Scots, collecting half of Alma's hits in a 3-3 performance.
Morgan Westall (4-4) picked up the win in the circle, going all 7 innings. She struck out 12 batters in the win, while allowing 7 hits, and walking 3.
The Scots look to return home to host U Chicago on Saturday, with the weekend's weather forecast the only thing standing between Alma and their home opener.
