Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Lacrosse opened their home season on Thursday with a matchup against Aquinas College. Alma was victorious by a final of 19-6.
Kylie Lewis opened the goal scoring with an unassisted marker at 12:06 in the first quarter. Aquinas responded to tie the game, and it took 5 minutes for the Scots to regain the lead, thanks to a
Rileigh McGeorge go ahead tally. After the first quarter, Alma led 2-1.
The first 5 minutes of the second frame might as well have been called "The
Sam Peterson Show". The senior attacker recorded a hattrick with the 3 goals coming just 3:14 apart to put Alma up 5-1. After a Saints clap back goal,
Briar-Rose Mackey scored while the Scots were down a woman, and then tallied again 25 seconds later. A 4
th goal from Peterson along with a second Lewis goal concluded the scoring with Alma up 9-2 at halftime.
The home side scored first in the 3
rd quarter with Peterson's 5
th goal at 13:55. She would score twice more in the quarter, and woman up tallies from
Skylar Glotfelter and
Kirsten Browne, along with an even strength goal from the latter pushed Alma's lead up to 11.
Lauren Kenny added one more goal to make it 16-4 at the break.
Mackey, Browne, and McGeorge all scored once more in the 4
th quarter, and Aquinas potted a pair of goals to cap the scoring, with the final at 19-6.
Alma dominated the game, outshooting the visitors 45-14, and controlling ground balls 23-15.
The most notable stat was
Sam Peterson's 7-goal, 8-point performance, but Alma got solid production throughout the lineup.
Briar-Rose Mackey record 5 points on 3 goals and a pair of assists,
Kirsten Browne also scored a hattrick in the win, with her first goal pushing her to the career milestone of 100.
Rileigh McGeorge recorded a game high 5 groundballs, and Alma caused 14 turnovers.
Kirsten Browne was a beast in the draw control department, earning 14 draw controls in the victory.
Cassidy Smith (3-4) picks up the win, and made 2 saves on 4 shots,
Alexis Norko made 1 save in a second half relief appearance.
The Scots improve to 3-4, and look to the start of MIAA play at Hope.
