Softball Finishes BSN Sports Softball Classic at 2-2 Following Day 2 Split

Marietta, OH – Alma College Softball took part in day two action of the BSN Sports Softball Classic on Sunday. The Scots split the day, defeating Wittenberg before falling to Marietta by the slimmest of margins.

Alma 13, Wittenberg 1 (6 Innings)

The Scots opened the day against Wittenberg, and opened the scoring in the 2nd inning. A pitch that wound up being the fourth ball to Mckenna Salley went wild, allowing Jordyn Porter to fly home and score the first run of the game. Porter aided the scoring efforts with her bat in the 3rd with an RBI single, which scored Danielle Dumoulin to make it 2-0. The lone Tiger run of the game scored in the 4th, cutting Alma's lead to 1.

The offense broke the game open in the 5th inning. Alma added an insurance run in the form of another Jordyn Porter RBI single to score Sydni Wolverton. Leading 3-1, Salley scored Porter from third later in the inning to push the score up to 4-1, and a Natalia Rodriguez double would add 2 more runs to the total. After 5 innings, the Scots were up 6-1.

Alma scored 4 more times in the 6th inning. The bases loaded up quickly, and Porter picked up her 3rd RBI of the day drawing a walk to score a run. With the bags still loaded, Jaycie Lavalley pulled out a double to left field to clear the basepaths, bringing the score to 10-1. The Scots lead hit double digits when Lavalley stepped on home plate courtesy of a Holzinger single, and Reneigh Sandmann smacked a double down the left field line to score the final two runs of the game.

Megan Krueger came on to close things down, and the Scots picked a 13-1 decision.

Porter's 3-3 effort at the plate resulted in 3 RBI, tying Jaycie Lavalley for the game high in runs batted in.

Mikaylyn Kenney (6-1) twirled 5 innings from the circle, allowing just 3 hits, and striking out 10. Megan Krueger pitched 1 inning in relief, and allowed 1 hit.

Marietta 7, Alma 6

The hosts Marietta were next on the schedule for Alma, and the Pioneers wasted no time taking a lead in their home park. A 3-run homer put Marietta up 3-0, and it was Alma who used the longball to respond in the form of a solo shot off the bat of Jordyn Porter in the 2nd. Marietta piled on 3 more runs in the 3rd inning, and led Alma 6-1 before the Scots offense sputtered to life.

A Pio error allowed Danielle Dumoulin to score, and RBI groundouts from Jaycie Lavalley and Mckenna Salley saw another pair of runs score to close the gap to 6-4. The hosts added what would prove to be the deciding run in the next half inning, and Alma trailed 7-4 heading into the 5th.

Lavalley singled home another pair of runs in the 6th to make it a 1-run game, but the comeback fell short as the Scots lined into an unfortunate double play with runners on second and third in the 7th to end the game.

Morgan Brandau went 2-3 in the loss, and Danielle Dumoulin drew a pair of walks. Jaycie Lavalley tallied 3 RBI in the contest.

Morgan Westall (3-3) picked up the loss for Alma. The sophomore pitched 2.2 innings, striking out 5 and walking 2. Halle Mockridge pitched 2.1 innings in relief, and Megan Krueger finished out the final frame for Alma, recording 1 strikeout.

The Scots return home, and are set to open their home season on Tuesday against Ohio Northern at Scots Park.
