Marietta, OH – Alma College Softball took a trip down to Ohio to take part in day one action of the BSN Sports Softball Classic on Saturday. The Scots split to open the weekend, defeating host Marietta, before falling to Wittenberg.
Alma 6, Marietta 2
The Scots opened the scoring in the first inning. Alma sent
Julia Duncan to steal second, and a throwing error by the home catcher allowed for
Reneigh Sandmann to scamper home. Duncan would later come around to score in the inning, with Alma up 2-0 after one.
Alma added to their tally with a
Morgan Brandau sac bunt in the 3
rd inning, scoring Duncan once more. Marietta responded with a pair of runs in the 4
th to cut the Alma lead to 1. A
Danielle Dumoulin RBU double in the 5
th inning scored
Sydni Wolverton to double that lead to 2. Dumoulin singled home another run in the 7
th, before scoring on a Brandau single to cap the scoring at 6-2.
Danielle Dumoulin accounted for 3 of Alma's 5 hits in the win.
Morgan Brandau scored 2 RBI, as did Dumoulin.
Mikaylyn Kenney (5-1) went the full 7 innings, striking out a whopping 15 hitters in the win.
Wittenberg 3, Alma 2
In their second game of the day, Alma took on Wittenberg University. The Tigers got on the board first in the 2
nd on a 2-run homer. The Scots scrapped to get the two runs back, finding runs on an RBI double off the bat of
Sophia Somerset, and a 4
th inning RBI single from
Reneigh Sandmann to tie the game at 2-2.
The game was lost on a heartbreaking Alma error with 2 away in the 7
th, allowing the go ahead run to score unearned. The Scots were unable to rally, and fell 3-2.
Jordyn Porter went 2-4, collecting 2 of Alma's 5 hits in the loss.
Morgan Westall (3-2) picked up the loss, pitching all 7 innings. She struck out 5 while walking none and allowing 8 hits.
The Scots are back at it tomorrow with 2 more games against Marietta and Wittenberg.
