Orlando, FL – Alma College Softball opened 2024 at the Space Coast Games in Florida. Alma began the new year on a high note, sweeping Point Park and British Columbia.
Alma 3, Point Park 1
The Scots scored in the first inning of the season against Point Park.
Reneigh Sandmann doubled to get aboard, and then was scored on a sac bunt from
Julia Duncan, and a sac fly from
Danielle Dumoulin. Things remained 1-0 late into the game, when Alma struck again.
Amelia Price singled to center field, and advanced on a pair of passed balls to third.
Emily Dimock then singled her home to double Alma's lead. The lead then moved to three when
Julia Duncan hit an RBI single, 3-0. PPU added one run of their own, but it wasn't enough, as
Mikaylyn Kenney closed out the game.
Reneigh Sandmann went 2-3 to open the season, leading the offense.
Mikaylyn Kenney struck out 7, going the distance to get the win.
Alma 4, UBC 3
The Scots turned around and took on Canadian based NAIA opponent, University of British Columbia. Alma hung a 4-spot on the Thunderbirds in the 2
nd inning. After Jordan Porter reached on a fielder's choice, she was doubled home by
Jaycie LaValley. LaValley was brought in by
Gwen Weber shortly after to make the score 2-0.
Madison Henegar made it 3-0, and
Emily Dimock added to the lead to move it to 4-0. UBC fought hard, collecting 3 runs in the next inning, but Alma held on for the win.
It was a balanced offensive approach from Alma.
Morgan Westall went the full 7.0 innings to collect the win, her first of the season.
