Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball continued MIAA play on Saturday when they hosted The University of Olivet. Alma was victorious by a final of 62-51.
Olivet opened the scoring just seconds into the game, and used a motion-centric offense to sting the Scots early and often in the opening minutes. Alma struggled early in tracking off-ball screens, resulting in open Comets driving to the hoop for easy scores. Despite allowing the inside looks, the hosts recovered well defensively and went to work on the boards. Combine that with timely shot making from senior guard
Brooke LeRoux, and the Scots were able to limit the damage to a three-point deficit after one quarter.
The second quarter was more of the same action. Alma paced well with the visitors in terms of scoring, but Olivet held Alma to just one made basket in the final five minutes of the quarter. In the same time frame, the Comets outscored the Scots 8-2, carrying a lead of 31-24 into the locker room at halftime.
For the third straight game, Alma adjusted well coming out of the half. The Scots forced more contested looks from Olivet, and found their scoring groove. Outscoring the Comets 18-11 in the period, the hosts erased their deficit, taking the lead at 39-37 with three and a half minutes to play. The opposition managed to tie the game, and the teams headed into the fourth quarter at 42-42.
A
Reagan Thorr three-pointer gave Alma the lead just 18 seconds into the final period, and the Scots never looked back from there. Despite several lunges and late pushes from the Comets, Alma held on to their lead, slowly pulling away. In the end, the Scots came out on top 62-51.
Balanced scoring was the name of the game for Alma, with
Reagan Thorr (13 points, 3 rebounds)
Cadence Kaminske (12 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists) and
Brooke LeRoux (12 points, 6 rebounds) all leading the charge.
Emmerson Goodin also contributed largely in the win, collecting a career high 16 rebounds to go with 8 points and 2 steals.
Alma moves to 2-1 in MIAA play, moving into a tie for 3
rd place with Calvin University. The Scots are back in action on December 18
th, when they take The College of Wooster, with tip-off set for 1 PM.
