Women's Basketball Sees Comeback Bid Fall Short Against Calvin

Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball took to the floor to continue MIAA conference play on Wednesday night. The Scots saw a comeback bid fall just short against Calvin University, falling 54-50.

Calvin opened the game with a strong 11-2 run in the opening minutes, managing a steady gap between seven and nine points for most of the first quarter. The visitors finally broke into a double-digit lead with under a minute to play in the first, only for an Anna Waterstredt layup to cut the deficit to eight. After the first, Alma trailed 21-13.

The Scots opened the scoring in the second quarter immediately with a Regan Thorr three to make it a five-point game. However, Calvin's offense woke up, and the Knights started to inch their way further ahead. The lead ballooned as high as 16, and the Scots just managed to keep the gap to 15 points at 41-26 heading into the half.

As was the case in their previous contest at Adrian College on Saturday, halftime adjustments were just what the doctor ordered. The Scots came out blazing defensively in the third quarter. Open looks from the first half were routinely being shut down, and the hosts were pulling closer to even in the rebounding battle. Holding Calvin to just six points in the third quarter, Alma managed a 12-spot to trail by nine heading into the final period.

The Scots stingy defense continued to get stronger as the final frame of the contest began. Alma held Calvin to five points in the first half of the fourth, managing eight of their own, and pulling the lead down to six points for Calvin at 52-46. Alma was able to pull within three, but a game tying triple from Madelyn Weber was short, and the Knights escaped with the 4-point win.

Brooke LeRoux (15 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals) Anna Waterstredt (13 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block) and Emmerson Goodin (8 points, 13 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals) were the key contributors in the loss.

Alma is back in action on Saturday, when they host The University of Olivet, with tipoff set for 3 PM.
