Cincinatti, OH – Alma College Women's Basketball opened play at the Lauren Hill Classic on Friday night. Taking on the host school Mount St. Joseph, the Scots were defeated by a final of 80-58.
Alma struggled with getting shots to fall early on in the contest. The Scots shot 27% compared to Mount's 52% in the opening period, and the opposition built a 17-8 lead. Alma held the gap at 9 until the end of the quarter at 25-16.
In the second quarter, the Scots offense picked up, and the Lions cooled off from the floor. The Scots were able to narrow the gap to 5 in the early going, but MSJ held off the charge, and Alma wound up trailing by 11 at the halftime break, 43-32.
Out of the half, both teams struggled to get shots to fall early. Mount St. Joe built up a 21-point advantage at 55-34 before the Scots offense started to fire up towards the end of the frame. A pair of made free throws from Molly Duerloo followed by a steal-and-score on the inbound from
Brooke LeRoux helped to pull the gap down to 57-43 at the end of the period.
The Lions were able to pull away in the fourth, shooting 50% from the floor, and 60% from beyond the arc. Alma found themselves on the wrong end of a 80-58 scoreline.
Brooke LeRoux (18 points, 5 steal, 4 rebounds) Molly Duerloo (8 points, 9 rebounds) and and
Breckyn Werner (8 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals) led the way for Alma in the loss.
The Scots are back in action tomorrow against Franklin College.
