Men's Soccer Come Up Short Against Calvin

Grand Rapids, MI – Alma College Men's Soccer faced Calvin University on Saturday October 26th, falling 3-0 at Calvin Soccer Stadium. The Scots played well but were unable to break through on the score sheet, resulting them losing this MIAA match.

The match began with opportunities for both sides. In the 19th minute, Ethan Swartzentruber pressed the Knight's back line and won the ball within the opposition's 18-yard box. Swartzentruber's weak footed shot narrowly missed the bottom right corner and went wide of the goal. In the 27th minute, Calvin would find the back of the net first. Despite this setback, Alma kept firing shots and creating chances. In the 41st minute, Felipe Soto created a dangerous opportunity for himself but was halted by the opposing goalkeeper. In the 42nd minute, Alma pinned the Calvin defense in their own 18-yard box and had two quality shots from long range that were both blocked by the Knight's defense. Mateo Cianci gathered the loose ball from the blocked shot and curled a shot towards the right corner of the net. Calvin's goalkeeper had to fully reach and tip the shot out for a Scots corner kick.

In the second half, the Scots continued to press in attempt to tie up the match. Calvin would end up sealing the match with a pair of late goals in the 69th minute and 82nd minute as the Scots had advanced their tactics forward in attempt to score a goal. Alma's defense worked hard throughout the match, limiting Calvin's scoring chances, but the Knights were effective in capitalizing on their opportunities. Goalkeeper, Bradshaw Uhlmann, recorded six saves in net, including a save on a penalty kick.

With a record of 8-8-1, the Scots look to win their final match of the season to solidify a winning season. Alma College will host Olivet University on October 29th at Scotland Yard at 4:30 pm. This match will be Alma's "Tartan Turnup" with a theme of white out.
