Men's Soccer Records First Winning Season in 8 Years with W Over Olivet

Alma, MI – Alma College Men's Soccer capped off their strong season with a thrilling and gritty 3-2 comeback victory against The University of Olivet on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at Scotland Yard. The Scots showcased their determination, rallying from an early deficit to secure a winning season.

The match started unfortunately for Alma, as the Comets struck first with an early goal in the third minute. Despite the early setback, the Scots maintained their composure and finished the first half strongly.
The Scots persistence paid off in the second half. In the 54th minute, Christian Sweis leveled the score on a left footed half volley from outside the box that dipped over the Olivet goalkeeper. This goal was assisted by Gerrit Barth. Just two minutes later, George Abner played a clipped through ball to Tristan Salazar. Salazar jumped up and flicked the ball into the net over the goalkeeper and defenders that were jumping with him. This goal marked Salazar's first goal of the season and Abner's first assist in their final game for the Scots.

Olivet would respond quickly, equalizing on a free kick in the 66th minute. With the score tied at 2-2, Alma turned up the pressure and regained control. Ethan Vollstedt received the ball and turned, then played a cross-field ball directly to Ethan Swartzentruber's feet directly in front of the goal. Swartzentruber calmly took a touch and placed the shot past the rushing Olivet goalkeeper. The Scots' goalkeeper Bradshaw Uhlman made 5 saves in 72 minutes of play. Leandro Vargas closed out the match with 1 save in the final 18 minutes of play.

This victory improves Alma's record to 9-8-1, marking their first winning season in 8 years. Coach Alister Newby mentioned after the match, "I am really pleased with the result of the game and the resiliency of the team over this past season. It was nice to round off the season with a win."
