Women's Basketball Locks Up Olivet in 44-Point Victory

Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball hosted The University of Olivet on Wednesday. Alma walked out winners in a big way, with the Scots flexing their muscle defensively.

Olivet scored to open the game, and both teams struggled to hit shots early. Alma fought their way to 5-5 tie at 5:30 in the opening quarter, and used a 10-5 run to close the quarter and take a 15-7 lead into the second. Alma held Olivet to 20% from the floor down the stretch.

Things quickly got out of hand in the second. Olivet scored first, and Alma got off to a slow start. The team needed 2 minutes to find their first basket, before the floodgates opened, and the Scots offense came roaring to life. In 4 minutes the score moved from 17-11 Alma, to 33-14 Scots. The massive run spanned the entire quarter, and saw Alma hitting from everywhere on the floor. When the dust settled, the Scots led by a score of 41-16.

The 25-point lead for Alma shrunk to 23 as the Comets scored the first basket of the third quarter, but the Scots answered with a pair of buckets. This was the theme of the quarter, as the home team always seemed to have an answer and a small run when Olivet scored. The Comets scored 10, their highest scoring quarter of the night, while Alma answered with 22 points of their own. The Scots led by 37 after three.

The bench was emptied by Sami Stormont in the fourth quarter, and the Scots continued to convert chances, and lock down tighter on defense. Alma held Olivet to just 8 points in the quarter, holding the Comets to single digits in three of four quarters. The lead for the Scots hit 40 on Megan Leslie three pointer, and never dipped below that mark for the remainder of the game. The final lead was 44 for Alma, and the final score landed at 78-34.

Taylor Sas (18 Points, 4 Made Threes, 2 Steals). Molly Duerloo (10 Points, 7 Rebounds, 4-6 FG) and Megan Leslie (7 Points, 7 Rebounds) were major contributors in a team win.

Alma moves to 10-9, and 6-4 in MIAA play. The Scots have a crucial game on the road on Saturday as they travel to Albion, with the two teams jockeying for 4th position in the league, and a home playoff game.
