Box Score 2 North Manchester, IN – Alma College Volleyball continued their 2023 non-conference schedule with a stop in Indiana. Alma defeated Concordia Chicago 3-1, before being defeated by Franklin 3-1.
Alma 3, Concordia-Chicago 1
The Scots didn't jump out to the quickest of starts, with Concordia taking the opening set 25-16. Alma then proceeded to rattle off three straight 2-point victories to take the match. The Scots took the second set at 27-25, before winning the final two sets by scores of 26-24. In the most literal sense, it was a victory by the slimmest of margins. The real note was Alma's breakthrough in the closing moments of each set. The Scots had struggled at points this season to close out sets, but finished on runs of 4-1, 6-1, and 7-2 to win the game.
Sienna Sahr had 18 kills to lead the offense, followed by
Brooke LeRoux with 14.
Vicky Villarosa was the assist leader with 24, and
Lexi Dykstra tallied 21. The defense was key in the W as well.
Madison Neu recorded 7 total blocks,
Callie Smith had 6, and
Ashlyn Michalski blocked 5 attacks to go with 7 kills.
Kolbey Boyd dug out 15 attacks, while Dykstra had 11.
Franklin 3, Alma 1
The Scots took on Franklin College immediately following their first game. The Scots won the opening set at 25-15, but Franklin came back strong and took three straight sets to win to contest. Franklin took the second set at 25-12, the third at 25-21, and the final set at 25-19.
Madison Neu led the team in kills with 11, followed by
Reagan Thorr with 10.
Lexi Dykstra and
Vicky Villarosa each tallied 19 assists in the loss.
Ashlyn Michalski led the Alma defense with 2 total blocks. Dykstra recorded the most digs at 11, while a trio of players came in behind her with 9 apiece.
Alma moves to 8-5, surpassing their 2022 win total before reaching MIAA play, and are back at Manchester tomorrow for another pair of games, including one against the hosts.
