Alma, MI – Alma College Football opened their season on Saturday against Ohio Northern at home. The 24
thranked Scots proved why they garnered a spot in the D3Football.com preseason Top 25 with a dominant 52-7 decision over the Polar Bears.
The first quarter was mostly tame, with the offenses feeling things out, and getting settled in. Alma broke the 0-0 tie late in the quarter, when
Ty Lotterman took a 3 yard screen pass from
Carter St. John and broke through to cap a 17 play drive, and score the first touchdown of the season. Alma's offense didn't have long to rest, in fact just 9 seconds. This was all it took for
Odin Soffredine to pick off the first ONU play on the next drive, and set the Scots up with a short field.
Jordan Williams was the next to hit the scoreboard, punching in a touchdown from 3 yards out to raise the score to 13-0, where it sat after one quarter.
The second quarter saw Alma break the game wide open. The Polar Bears finally broke through on a 7 play, 75 yard drive, and the Scots responded in just 1 play. St. John hit a streaking
Devon Frenchko in stride for 75 yards to score. Just two minutes later,
Eddie Williams scored his first touchdown of the season, followed up by Frenchko's second long strike of the day, this one from 49 yards out. At halftime, the score was 35-7.
The third quarter featured two more scoring plays. Ithaca product Zach Poff scored his first career touchdown on a 10 yard reception from St. John, and
Jacob Kluk added a 25 yard field goal.
Trent Devereaux capped the game's scoring in the fourth on a 6 yard scamper into the endzone.
Alma's passing attack was led by
Carter St. John, who posted an 18-25 outing for 288 yards and 4 touchdowns. The leading rusher was
Eddie Williams, who carried 14 times for 69 yards and a score.
Devon Frenchko was the receiving leader, at 139 yards and 2 touchdowns on 3 receptions.
Bryce Fredenburg and
Odin Soffredine led in terms of tackles with 4 apiece, while Soffredine also led with 2 sacks and an interception.
Gage Nelson also snagged a diving interception.
The Scots are off to a 1-0 start, and look forward to next week's matchup with Manchester (IN).
