Football Cruises Past Manchester, Moves to 2-0

North Manchester, IN – Alma College Football was on the road on Saturday to take on the Spartans of Manchester University. Alma picked up the win by a large margin, 68-0.

Alma controlled the game from the outset, taking advantage of an early fumble on the third play of the game, to set up the Scots offense with great field position. Alma needed just two plays, with Eddie Williams taking a 6-yard push pass from Carter St. John into the endzone to give the visitors a 7-0 lead. With one Williams already on the scoresheet, Jordan Williams wanted in on the fun as well. The freshman scored on a 23-yard pass roughly 9 minutes later, and a successful 2-point conversion attempt made it 15-0. The Scots struck once more in the opening frame, with Davin Reif punching in a rushing touchdown from 1-yard out. After one quarter, it was 22-0 Scots.

The second quarter featured 4 scoring plays from the Scots. Alma tacked 3-points onto their lead courtesy of a Josh Hernandez field goal from 30 yards out, his first of the season. The Alma defense got on the board as well, forcing a safety from a bad snap by Manchester on 4th and long. With the score at 27-0, Zach Poff hauled in a 68 yard pass from Carter St. John to extend the lead to 34-0, and Trent Devereaux's first passing touchdown of 2023 with 0:40 left in the half made it a 41-0 ballgame.

In the second half, the Scots rotated in a younger group of players who made the trip down to Indiana. Alma gained valuable experience in the ranks of it's depth in the latter two quarters. The offense moved to more conservative run-based play calling, and scored their final points on a 26-yard pitch and catch from Devereaux to Gage Krueger, bringing the score to 48-0.
Defense and special teams did the rest of the scoring. With 10:47 to play, Preston Marlatt scooped up a Spartan fumble, taking it 30-yards to the house. Just 47 seconds later, Ja'Martae Hogan snagged an interception, and brought that back 20 yards to score as well. The scorebook went quiet until the waning moments of the game, when the Spartans lined up for a field goal. The Scots blocked the attempt, and Marlatt grabbed the ball on it's way down, and ran the miss back 100 yards to score on the final play of the contest. The score line rested at 68-0.

Carter St. John led Alma with 172 yards, and 3 TD through the air. Jordan Williams led the ground game with 45 yards on 4 carries. Zach Poff led receivers with 68 yards on just one reception. Defensively, Cam Jarrett led with 5 total tackles.

Alma will be in action next week as they host Anderson in the Hall of Fame Game.
