Hanover, IN – Alma College Volleyball took to the road on Friday to take part in day one of the Hanover Invitational. Alma triumphed over the University of Sewanee by a 3-2 final.
The teams traded sets to get to the fifth. Alma took the opening set in a rather dominant fashion. The Scots landed 3 straight aces to open the contest, and ran away from Sewanee from there. Alma led by close to double digits for most of the opening set, before winning it 25-15. The opposition fought back, taking a closely contested second set 25-22. Alma put Sewanee up against the edge by taking set three 25-23, but things were far from over. The Scots couldn't put things away in the fourth, falling 25-18 and sending things to a winner-take-all fifth set. Alma raced out to a 4-1 lead, and didn't let Sewanee anywhere near them from there. The Scots closed out the game with a 15-10 win in the final frame.
The main key to the Scots' success was their hitting. In a game where both teams hit within .001 of each other, Alma hit .500 or better in the opening set, and the final stanza, both sets that the Scots won handily.
Sienna Sahr was the star offensively for the Scots. The freshman finished with a game high 21 kills on .366 hitting. Also hitting a red hot .438 was
Callie Smith in the middle, who finished with 10 kills. The offense also so major contribution from
Brooke LeRoux (16 kills) and
Madison Neu (10 kills).
Lexi Dykstra led with 25 assists, while
Vicky Villarosa added 24.
Kolbey Boyd led on defense with 18 digs, followed by LeRoux with 16.
Ashlyn Michalski and
Reagan Thorr each recorded 1.5 blocks in the game.
Alma wins their 4
th straight, and moves to 7-2 on the season. Alma takes on Berea and host Hanover tomorrow.
