Alma, MI - Alma College Volleyball opened their season at the Great Lakes Crossover on Friday. The Scots earned a split, falling to Capital 3-1, and defeating Washington College 3-2.
Capital 3, Alma 1
Alma faced off with Capital in their season opening match.The opposition controlled much of the first 2 sets. Capital quickly went up 2-0, winning sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-16. Alma looked to be on the brink of defeat in the third set, trailing 24-21, before ripping off 5 straight points to take the set 26-24. The Scots' luck would run out in the fourth, as Capital pulled away to win 25-16.
Offensively, Alma was led by Brooke LeRoux, who had 16 kills.
Reagan Thorr also notched 8 kills. Lexy Dykstra contributed with 5 aces, and LeRoux also chipped in 3 aces of her own. Dykstra and
Vicky Villarosa split time at setter, and led the team in assists. Dykstra led with 14, while Villarosa added 13.
Defensively, the Scots' net presence was headed up by
Ashlyn Michalski and
Reagan Thorr, who each notched 3 blocks in the loss.

Alma 3, Washington 2
The second match of the day saw Alma take on Washington College. The Scots won the first set 25-22, before dropping sets two and three to their opponents. With their backs against the wall, the Scots turned in a dominant fourth set performance, winning 25-13. The fifth set began and the momentum moved heavily in Washington's favor. The Shorewomen jumped out to a 7-1 lead, only for the Scots to catch fire. Alma went on a massive 14-4 run to win the game, and claim their first victory of the season.
LeRoux once again led the offense for Alma, slamming home 17 kills in the win. Thorr and Sahr added 11 and 10 respectively. Sahr also led from the service line with 3 aces. The Scots setting duo of Dykstra and Villarosa combined for 47 assists in the victory.
Defensively,
Callie Smith led the blocking effort, with 3 denials in the contest. LeRoux added 2, and Michalski contributed 1. As far as digs,
Kolbey Boyd recorded 19, which tied for the game high. Dykstra and Sahr each put up 13 digs.
The Scots will be back at it tomorrow, with another pair of games at Cedar Point.
