ALMA, Mich. – The Alma College women's soccer team kicked off the athletics on Alma College's campus with a home game at Scotland Yard against Denison University. The Scots jumped out to an early lead in the first half though ultimately the Big Reds would net two and come away with the win.
The game started out as a back-and-forth contest for the first five minutes before Alma opened up the scoring for the 2023 campaign. Alma would push down the field and Jacqueline Daigneault would set up a pass towards the center of the net intended for Lily Stephan but a Denison defender would catch a piece of it with her attempted header and send it into her own net giving Alma an early 1-0 lead just over six minutes in. Both teams apply pressure for the rest of the first half but neither would budge and both teams headed into the half with the Scots leading 1-0.
Alma would start the second half with possession and would try to keep the momentum going from the first half but a Big Red feed on a crossing pass would tie the game at one apiece. Denison would add another tally eight minutes later on a shot that found the top right portion of the net, giving them a 2-1 lead with 30 minutes remaining. Alma battled hard for the remaining time and saw several quality chances fighting back to tie the game. A couple shots on goals and some good saves kept the Scots off the board for the remainder of the game as the Scots fell to 0-1-0 to start the season.
Daigneault tallied her first goal of the season for the Scots as Lily Stephan recorded three shots to lead Alma. Four Scots tied for one shot on goal apiece to tie for the lead in that respective category.
The Scots will now turn their heads towards a matchup with Kenyon College, tomorrow, September, 2nd at 4:00 PM. Alma will host the Owls at Scotland Yard on the campus of Alma College.
