Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team completed the season series with Calvin University on Wednesday, May 3rd, with an 8-7 win over the Knights to take the series two games to one.
The Scots jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, starting with Leadoff hitter Kevin Tuttle reaching first on an error and advancing to second. Avery Carnicom sent him home in the second at bat with a single up the middle putting Alma on the board first. Carnicom would advance go second on a balk before Cole Grunwald singled down the left field line which allowed Carnicom to score for an early 2-0 lead. Alma would hold Calvin scoreless throughout the third and add on another run. In the third, Grunwald singled to third base as well as Wyatt Nyswaner hitting a single to put runners on first and second. Kyler Warren collected the third single consecutively which scored Grunwald and put Alma on top 3-0.
In the fourth, two Alma batters reached first after HBP's before Nyswaner loaded the bases with a single up the middle. Warren then singled to left field and advanced to second on an error by the outfielder, scoring two runs. Stephen McGlade flowed right behind with a single also into left field and both Warren and Nyswaner scored giving the Scots a 7-0 lead. The Knights would break the ice in the fourth putting two runs on the board while still trailing 7-2. In the top of the fifth, Mitch Foley singled into left center and Tuttle also singled to left center sending Foley to third. Carnicom then fouled out but Foley used his speed and tagged up before crossing home to tack on the eighth Alma run. The Knight scored another run in the fifth and an additional run in the sixth to bring themselves within four. Alma would be held scoreless the rest of the outing while Calvin added three runs in the bottom of the eighth but Chase Balhoff would hold on and record his third save of the season in the ninth as the Scots came away victorious in a midweek matchup.
Cam Jones got the start in the matchup and went three innings while recording a strikeout. Zac Olesuk was recorded with. The win after two innings pitched and two strikeouts. Josh West also pitched two innings with two strikeouts to tie Olesuk for the game-high.
The Scots will now hit the road for the final time this regular season as they travel to Olivet College for a Saturday doubleheader on May 6th. The first game is expected to start at 1:00 PM with the second game to start around 3:30 PM.
