Carnicom Breaks Two More Records as Baseball Completes Series Sweep of Albion

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALBION, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team continued their regular season series with the Britons on Saturday, April 8th, with a doubleheader. The Scots were able to win both games on the day and complete the series sweep with an 8-4 game one win and a 13-3 game two win.

In game one, the Scots trailed early to the Britons as they recorded two runs in the bottom of the second and a run in the bottom of the seventh to hold a 3-0 lead, late into the game. Alma's bats were hot in the eighth as they were able to get on the board. Cameron Bleasdale started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Padyn Kesselring sent Bleasdale home with a single to right field and bring the deficit down to two runs. Mitch Foley then reached first on a throwing error and Alma now had runners at the corners with Kevin Tuttle up to bat. Tuttle laid down a bunt and put Albion into a frenzy as he was thrown out at first on the sacrifice bunt but Foley scored and Kesselring advanced to third. The bases were then loaded on an intentional walk to Avery Carnicom and Cole Grunwald was hit by a pitch. Tony Smith came in as a pinch hitter and drew a walk to score the tying run for Alma. Dalton D'Alexander then tallied two RBIs on a single to right center allowing for Grunwald and Carnicom to score and give Alma a 5-3 lead.

The Britons would score an additional run in the bottom of the eighth on a balk, but Alma extended their lead in the ninth. Three straight walks in the ninth inning led to the bases loaded as Smith was up to the plate. Smith put a ball into play on the right side as he singled and scored two runners for Alma. D'Alexander was able to single up the middle which allowed for Grunwald to score the final run of the game for the Scots. Alma shut the Britons down in the bottom of the ninth and came away from game one with an 8-4 win.

Cam Jones started on the mound for Alma and was able to strikeout five Albion batters. Brendan McManus was credited the win as he came in for relief and recorded a strikeout of his own.

In game two, the Scots started out hot and once they had the lead, they never looked back. In the top of the first, Tuttle singled to left field as the leadoff hitter and put himself on base early. Carnicom followed behind with a double to left field and put runners into scoring position. Tuttle and Carnicom both advanced forward one base as a wild pitch was thrown and Alma was on the board 1-0. Jacob Cornman then scored Carnicom on a groundout to third base and the Scots left the first with a 2-0 lead.

In the second inning, Stephen McGlade led off with a double and Bleasdale singled which put runners on the corners for Alma. Foley would then reach first on a fielder's choice as McGlade was thrown out at home. Carnicom then sent all runners across homeplate as he hit a record-breaking homerun down the left field line for a three-run shot. This was Carnicom's 10th homerun of the season which surpassed mark Gilling and Josh Robinson who both previously hit nine in a season for the record. Alma was not done though as they added more runs following the milestone achievement from Carnicom. Grunwald singled following the homerun and was then sent home on a double by Kyler Warren. Cornman then sent Warren acrossed home as he singled to right field and Alma had a 7-0 lead.

In the third, Alma put runners on first and third on a single from Bleasdale and Foley reached by error. Bleasdale would score on a wild pitch and Foley advanced to second during the same play. Kevin Tuttle was then walked and Foley advanced to third on a wild pitch, putting runners on the corners again. Carnicom would hit a sacrifice fly ball to left center that was caught, but Foley used his speed and tagged up to make it across home which would be another milestone moment for Carnicom. The RBI from the sacrifice fly was Carnicom's 113th career RBI which set him one past Gilling for solo possession of the All-Time Career RBI leader at Alma College.

Albion was able to break the ice in the fourth as they scored one run and then another two in the sixth to make the score 10-3. The Scots added another run in the seventh and eighth to increase their lead to nine before they headed into the final inning. In the top of the ninth, Cornman hit the Scot's second homerun of the game as he took one over the left center wall to increase their lead to ten again. Albion would not have a chance as they went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth and Alma was able to win all three regular season games and sweep the Britons.

Zac Olesuk was given the start in game two and was also credited with the win as he recorded two strikeouts in his six innings of work.

Alma will now take Sunday off before they host Calvin University on Monday, April 10th, at Klenk Park. The game is set to begin at 4:00 PM.
