Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. – The Alma College baseball team got back to their winning ways on Friday, April 14th, as they took on the Thunder of Trine University. The Scots won the first game of the series by a final score of 7-2.
Alma put the first tallies on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning starting off with Kyler Warren hitting a single to right field. Stephen McGlade then drew a walk that pushed Warren into scoring position. Cameron Bleasdale was able to then put a ball into play down the left field line for a double which advanced McGlade third and allowed for Warren to score. In the next at bat, Dalton D'Alexander grounded out to third base but McGlade snuck across home to give Alma a 2-0 lead. Trine responded in the bottom of the inning with a single run to cut the lead in half. The Thunder also scored in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2, but the Thunder would be held of the scoreboard for the rest of the game.
In the fifth, D'Alexander and Mitch Foley both singed to reach base. D'Alexander would advance to second on a wild pitch during the Foley at bat before advancing to third on the bunt single. Foley during the next at bat turned on the burners as he headed for second which allowed for D'Alexander to make his way across home as both players successful stole. Foley would not need to steal another base as Avery Carnicom came to the plate and sent a ball over the center field wall for a two-run homerun, pushing the score to 5-2.
The Scots would add icing on to the cake in the ninth as Kevin Tuttle reached first on a single to left field and was followed behind by Carncim being intentionally walked put Scots on the basepaths. Cole Grunwald doubled to left center which sent Tuttle home and Carnicom to third before Warren would hit a sacrifice flyout to left field and give time for Carnicom to tag up and make it across homeplate pushing the score to 7-2.
Starting on the mound was Cam Jones who pitched six complete innings and recorded six strikeouts. Davin Reif and Brendan McManus both came in as relief and each recorded a strikeout along with Reif getting his first save of the season.
Alma will complete the season series with Trine tomorrow, April 15th, at Klenk Park. The doubleheader will begin at 1:00 PM with the second game to start around 4:00 PM.
