Box Score ALMA Mich. – The Alma College baseball team opened up the week with a game against the Knights of Calvin University. Alma came away with their fourth straight win and their first of the series against Calvin by a final score of 9-3.
Calvin would get on the board first as they knocked in a run in the bottom of the first after a leadoff double. The Knights extended their lead after three scoreless innings in the fifth with two runs to take a 3-0 lead. The Scots battled back in the bottom of the fifth and took advantage of patience at the plate. Mac Hawley led the inning off by wearing a pitch on the sleeve and took first base. Taha Ebrahim came in as a pinch runner and advanced to second during the next at bat with a groundout. Ethan Krafft and Kevin Tuttle came to the box next and both stood there as a pitch caught a piece of both batters and loaded the bases as a result. Avery Carnicom came to the plate with the bases loaded and looked to take advantage of the opportunity but he also was hit with a pitch and collected an RBI as Ebrahim crossed home. Cole Grunwald connected with a pitch and sent it into short left field as he singled and scored two runs, tying the game for the Scots. After a mid-inning pitching change, Kyler Warren hit a ball into deep right center and was able to send two runners home as he made it to third on a stand up triple which gave Alma a 5-3 lead.
Alma increased their lead in the bottom of the seventh when Krafft kicked off the inning with a single to left field. Carnicom was then intentionally walked and Grunwald reached first on an error, loading the bases for Alma once again. Warren collected another extra base hit with a double to left field which cleared the bases and increased the Scots lead to five. Warren would advance to third on a wild pitch and eventually across homeplate as Dalton D'Alexander hit a sacrifice fly into left field allowing for the tag-up and score.
The Scots would hold off a late push by the Knights in the ninth and come away with another win as they are heating up in conference play. Grunwald was the starting pitcher for Alma as he collected six strikeouts and five hits in six innings on the bump. Warren knocked in five RBI today and Grunwald recorded another two, playing on both sides on the field.
Alma and Calvin will see each other later this week as they face off again on Wednesday, April 12th, as they play the next two in Grand Rapids. Wednesday's game is set to start at 4:00 PM.
