Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Alma College baseball team concluded their Mississippi portion of their spring break trip on Tuesday, February 28th. Alma played Millsaps for the second time in three days as a part of the Millsaps Baseball Classic at Twenty Field. The Scots came away victorious in the game, defeating the Majors by a final score of 16-6 in seven innings.
Alma was able to open the scoring in the first inning with a single by Avery Carnicom, which drove Kevin Tuttle home who was walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The Scots continued the scoring in the second when Tony Smith reached first on a dropped third strike and made his way to second on an error by the pitcher, Smith then reached third after tagging up on a fly out. Dalton D'Alexander was able to send him home with a double to right center giving Alma a 2-0 lead. The Scots kept the hammer down and added four more runs in the fourth starting with a Carnicom single and a Kyler Warren walk. Cole Grunwald was then able to put the ball on the barrel and double to right center sending both. Carnicom and Warren across homeplate. Smith was then able to draw a walk and Dalton Hall single to third base which sent Grunwald home. D'Alexander also singled towards third and was able to collect an RBI as Smith would reach home and put the Scots up 6-0.
Leading off the top of the fourth inning for the Scots was Carnicom who connected with a pitch and added to his already impressive season with another home run over the left field wall. The solo shot in the game gave Carnicom his 21st career home run which now places him tied for first in career home runs with Mark Gilling, a record that has stood since 1989.
The home runs didn't stop there though, Hall hit a ball hard over the left field wall for his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot. Heading into the sixth inning, Alma was leading the Majors 9-0. Picking up in the sixth, with the bases loaded, Hall collected two more RBI with a single through the left side. D'Alexander followed behind with a single up the middle and was able to score Smith. Tuttle was then hit by a pitch to load the bases again, which led to Preston Schroyer wearing a pitch on the inside and scoring another Alma run. Alma held the Majors scoreless through the first five innings, but the Majors broke through and tallied six runs in the sixth to tighten the game, 13-6.
In the seventh, after two Scots had stolen bases and put themselves into scoring position, Mitch Foley singled and advanced to second on the throw. Foley scored both baserunners and gave the Scots a 15-6 lead. Foley then advanced to third on a wild pitch before D'Alexander hit a sacrifice fly to left field and Foley tagged up and crossed homeplate giving Alma a ten-run lead. The Majors were unable to score in the bottom of the seventh and Alma was heading towards Louisiana with a win.
Cam Jones was the starting pitcher for the Scots was credited with the win. Jones collected four strikeouts in five innings pitched. Chase Balhoff came in as a reliever and recorded two strikeouts. Carnicom batted 4-5 at the dish for the game, along with Hall batting 3-4 with five RBI on the day. D'Alexander recorded four RBI to follow behind.
Alma now travels to Centenary College (La.) for a four-game series. The first game is set to take place on Friday, March 3rd, with the opening pitch at 4:00 PM EST.
