Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Alma College baseball team found their way into the win column on Saturday, February 18th, as they faced off against Virginia Wesleyan University in North Carolina. The Scots routed the Marlins 16-4 in eight innings for their first win of the season.
The Scots scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Avery Carnicom doubled and put the Scots into scoring position. Sheldon Huff singled to center field and Carnicom had enough time to cross home giving Alma the lead.
In the third, Alma put more runs on the board starting with Cameron Bleasdale staying patient at the plate and drawing a walk. Carnicom reached on an error which then led to Huff singling again and sending Bleasdale home. Stephen McGlade then doubled to Right field and both runners on base would score. Dalton D'Alexander then reached first on a dropped fly ball to center field and advanced to second which allowed for McGlade to score another run for Alma. Ethan Krafft would then single and steal second to put himself into scoring position. Tony Smith added two RBI to his season total as he sent D'Alexander and Smith home to give the Scots a 7-0 lead. VWU would break the silence and record four runs in the top of the fourth, tightening up the game.
Alma responded in the fourth with Bleasdale leading off with a double. Carnicom also doubled following him and scored Bleasdale early in the inning. Huff then laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached first on a throwing error which then allowed him to advance to second, Caricom would score on the play. Mtch Foley came in to pinch run for Huff and several batters later would score from a Krafft single. Wyatt Nyswaner pinch hit and it paid off as his single allowed for D'Alexander to score, giving Alma a 11-4 lead.
The Scots would add two more runs in the fifth from defensive mistakes from VWU which increased their lead to 13-4. In the eighth, Alma loaded the bases on singles from D'Alexander and Krafft while Preston Schroyer drew a walk. Kevin Tuttle racked up three RBI on a single to right field which gave Alma a 16-4 lead, and the game was called through eight.
The Scots will now return to the "Great Lakes" state and prepare for their spring break trip to Mississippi and Louisiana. The team will play their next game on Sunday, February 26th, as they face off against Millsaps College in Mississippi.
