Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball hosted Albion College on Saturday. The Scots were victorious, knocking off the Britons in a nailbiter, 60-57.
Alma trailed after one quarter, despite a solid start. The team scored with the Britons, making shots, but faltering in offensive output in the waning moments of the quarter. Alma shot 40% from the floor compared to Albion's 60%, but was carried on by a 3-5 showing from downtown in the frame. It was a physical quarter as well, with just 2 fouls called, both on Alma. At the end of one, it was 19-15 Britons.
The second was much more defensive. The teams clamped down, and buckets became very hard to come by. Albion was held to just 8 points on 3-15 shooting (20%) in the quarter. Alma also struggled to score, but was able to scrap together 13 points to Albion's 8, giving Alma a lead of 28-27 at the halftime break.
Out of the break, Albion got hot. The visitors knocked down several shots in a row to take the lead, and extend it. However, the Scots weren't done. Alma rallied to bring things level, even pushing ahead by 4, before the Brits tied things at 43-43 heading into the fourth quarter.
As the clock wound down, teams continued to get stingy, trading blows with one another. Punch and counterpunch led to Albion leading 52-51 with 1:49 to go. Alma used a
Reagan Thorr 3-pointer to take the lead for good, and one minute later was back at the free throw line, where the junior put Alma up 56-52. Playing the foul game, Alma led by 3 with 6 seconds left. A last second heave by Albion was no good, and Alma walked out winners by 3.
Taylor Sas (14 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists)
Reagan Thorr (11 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal) and
Maddie Robbins (6 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals) were the key contributors for Alma.
The Scots move to 2-1 in MIAA play, and have a week off before they see Calvin on the road.
