Late Surge Comes Up Short for Women's Basketball at Calvin

Grand Rapids, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball continued MIAA play on Saturday, taking on Calvin University on the road. Despite a furious late push, the Scots were unable to complete a comeback, falling 73-66.

The Scots struggled to take the lid off the basket in the opening quarter. Shots just weren't going in despite Alma getting the looks that they wanted to from their offense. Calvin took advantage of the 7-minute long scoring drought to jump out to a 13-0 lead. Alma fought back hard, going on an 8-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 5 after one quarter.

Following a quarter where Alma struggled to score, the Scots exploded for 23 points in the second. The only issue came in the form of 25 Calvin points, as the home team refused to allow Alma to find a way into things. The teams traded jabs for much of the quarter, and Alma shot 20% better in the second frame than the first. The final shot of the quarter was a Taylor Sas three to cut the lead to 7 at 38-31 come halftime.

Out of the half, Calvin looked as though they might pull away. Alma's shooting continued to improve, and the Scots were able to survive a Calvin surge and remain in the game largely thanks to a 3-4 showing from downtown in the frame. The Knights offense continued to push Alma's defense, and scored 23 points to Alma's 18.

The fourth quarter saw the Scots push as hard as possible to get back into things. Calvin did well to hold the Scots away for 6 minutes, but Alma got hot, pulling the gap down to single digits, and as low as 3. However, the late surge was fended off by Calvin, and the Scots couldn't get things tied up.

Taylor Sas (19 Points, 6 Rebounds, 4 Assists) Breckyn Werner (12 Points, 4 Rebounds) and Maddie Robbins (11 Points, 9 Rebounds, 7 Assists) were the leaders in the loss.

The Scots have three days off before taking on #13 Millikin University and Augustana College (IL) at Hope College's Post Exam Jam.
