Olivet, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball was on the road on Wednesday evening to open up MIAA conference play against The University of Olivet. Alma was victorious in a back and forth battle, pulling away to win 65-51.
Alma scored the opening 5 points of the game, and used that short run to push a lead out quickly in the first quarter. The game took a more defensive shape, as shots weren't falling for either team from far out, and the game shifted focus more towards a battle in the paint. Enter
Izzy Alston. Alston scored 7 of Alma's 19 first quarter points, and her work inside opened up looks around the floor for the Scots offense.
Carrying a 19-11 lead into the second quarter, the baskets on both sides remained empty for the majority of the quarter. The Scots scored on a brief stint to extend their lead, but were limited to 9 points in the second frame. That, coupled with a furious Olivet run at the end of the half, saw the Comets outscore the visitors 15-9 in the period, and Alma go into the locker room with a slim 2-point advantage at 28-26.
Out of the break, the Alma offense exploded, as the Scots rattled home shot after shot. The makes came fast, and in the blink of an eye, the visitors had opened up a 20 point gap. The 27 points that Alma scored in the quarter came 1 shy of doubling their first half output, and gave the Scots a comfortable lead of 19 heading into the fourth.
Olivet attempted to mount a furious comeback in the final quarter. The Comets outscored Alma 10-4 before the Scots were able to string together a few buckets to stop the run. A dagger three from Molly Duerloo put the game away, as Alma walked out 65-51 winners.
Alma was led by
Brooke LeRoux (10 Points, 11 Rebounds) and
Izzy Alston (19 Points, 8 Rebounds).
Maddie Robbins (8 Points, 6 Rebounds, 5 Assists, 4 Steals) was also a major contributor in the victory.
Alma starts off MIAA play with a win, and looks forward to a home date with Adrian College at 5 PM on Saturday.
