Alma, MI – Alma College Women's Basketball welcomed the Tigers of Wittenberg University on Tuesday. Alma was victorious, upsetting the freshly minted WBCA #21 team in the country in double overtime.
Despite the outcome, the game didn't start in Alma's favor, with the Tigers scoring the first 6 points of the contest. Alma fought back, doing just enough to contain the Tigers offense, while scoring enough to keep themselves in it. Wittenberg ended the opening quarter up 23-14.
The second quarter was more of the same. Shots stopped falling for the visitors, but they held the Scots at arms length. That was until the closing moments of the half. Alma fired off a quick 8-3 run, with Wittenberg unable to find the stops that they were in the early portion of the frame. That run was crucial in keeping Alma in the game, as the Scots cut the deficit down to 3 points at the halftime buzzer, 35-32.
Out of the halftime break, Alma made their presence felt. The Scots got on the board early in the quarter to cut the lead to one. The teams traded blows, before a
Taylor Sas three at the 7:27 mark gave Alma it's first lead of the night at 39-37. Wittenberg fought back hard, regaining the lead, and moving the gap up as far as 11 points. However, the Scots weren't done, as Alma ripped off a 16-2 run to lead 55-52 heading into the fourth.
Things came down to the wire in the fourth, with neither team able to pull away from the other, and both landing their best blows of the night. The game was thought to be over when a Tigers double team tactic failed, and
Maddie Robbins found
Breckyn Werner wide open for a layup with 17 seconds left, but Wittenberg forced OT.
The first OT saw the teams knotted at 8-8, with the highlight coming in the form of a huge Wittenberg three, which forced a second OT. Alma jumped out to a 5 point lead in the second overtime, managing to fend off Wittenberg, and scoring a massive 17 points in the second set of 5 extra minutes. Clutch free throw shooting late in the period helped to seal the deal.
Taylor Sas (39 Points, 5 Rebounds, 2 Blocks) pumped in a career high 39 points on 7-15 shooting from downtown.
Molly Duerloo (19 Points, 6 Rebounds)
Maddie Robbins (10 Points, 10 Assists, 8 Rebounds) and
Brooke LeRoux (12 Points, 4 Rebounds, 2 Steals) also were major contributors in the W.
The Scots have a statement win on their 2023-24 resume, and look forward to the Pat Deacon Classic this weekend.
