Alma, MI – Alma College Volleyball took to the road to take on Saint Mary's in MIAA play. Alma fought hard and won 3-2.
Kolbey Boyd reached a milestone in the 4
th set, when she recorded her 1000
th career dig as a Scot.
St. Mary's took the opening set after finding a way to pull clear of the Scots. The hosts took the 1
st set 25-18. Alma battled back, and grabbed the 2
nd set 25-23 in a set where nobody wanted to give an inch. St. Mary's raced out to a firm 11-4 lead in the 3
rd set. Alma struggled to find rhythm in the set as the home six pulled further away, leading by as much as 13 at 19-6. Alma put on a slight rally, but the Scots dropped the set 25-12, and trailed 2 sets to 1.
The 4
th set looked to be Alma's from the jump. The visitors opened with a 6-1 lead, before St. Mary's went on a run of their own to take the lead back from the Scots. The teams battled back and forth, and the Scots looked in the clear, until the Belles once again pulled the game level. Alma closed out the set at 25-23, forcing a 5
thand final set.
Alma opened up with a 3-0 lead, before the Belles answered with 2 straight points of their own. A quick run later, and Alma forced a Belles timeout at 7-3, and another at 11-5. In the end, Alma took the set at 15-6, and won the game.
Brooke LeRoux and
Reagan Thorr each pumped in 17 kills in the win.
Lexi Dykstra tossed 42 assists in the victory. LeRoux piled on to her offensive output by adding 5 aces to her total. Dykstra also led the Alma defense with 22 digs. She was followed by
Kolbey Boyd with 15 digs, LeRoux with 12. The middle duo of
Ashlyn Michalski and
Madison Munley each recorded 3 total blocks.
Alma moves to 12-9, and 2-4 in MIAA play, as the Scots win a game that was crucial to keeping their MIAA tournament hopes alive. Alma looks forward to a road double header in Ohio on Saturday.
