ALMA, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team hosted the Olivet Comets on Saturday, May 7, in the last two home games of the season. Alma split the day with Olivet winning the first game 7-6 and dropping the second game, 10-5.
In the first game of the day, Olivet jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Alma responded in the bottom of the inning starting with Joshua Robinson (Dewitt, Mich.) reaching first on an error and advancing to second on the throw. Jacob Cornman (Birch Run, Mich.) would send Robinson home on a deep ball to right field that was dropped the fielder, tying the game at one aside. Olivet regained the lead in third with a single run, making the score 2-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Dalton D'Alexander (Canton, MIch.) led off the Scots and singled to center field. Kevin Tuttle (Woodhaven, Mich.) collcted a base hit and advanced D'Alexander to second in the process. Robinson then grounded out to third base but advanced both runners into scoring position. Avery Carnicom (Woodhaven, Mich.) added to his record season with another RBI single, scoring D'Alexander. Cooper Kauffold (Sebewaing, Mich) drew a walk to load the bases with Ethan Krafft (Canton, Mich.) next up to bat. Krafft then was hit by a pitch which moved each runner forward and Tuttle scored, giving Alma their first lead of the day. Olivet would regain the lead 4-3, in the sixth.
Down a run in the eighth, Krafft would lead off for the Scots and collect a single. The next batters would draw a couple walks to load the bases for Alma. D'Alexander then sacrifice hit to the pitcher and was thrown out at first, but Krafft crossed home plate and tied the game at 4-4. In the top of the ninth, Olivet added two runs to take a 6-4 lead, putting Alma down with their last at-bats approaching. Robinson led of the bottom of the ninth with a single to right field. Carnicom followed behind with a single to third base. Kauffold also singled to right field, loading the bases for Alma. Krafft and Ian Hart (Brighton, Mich.) were both hit by pitches in consecutive at-bats and tied the game at sixes. Wyatt Nyswaner (Clio, Mich.) came to the plate with the game on his bat and connected with a pitch, sending it to right field and scoring Kauffold at home for a walk-off win.
Tyler Johnson (Lexington, Mich.) started on the mound for the Scots and recorded 10 strikeouts on the day. Ty Sobczak (Petoskey, Mich.) collected two strikeouts and recorded the win moving him to 3-1 for the year.
The Scots looked to send the seniors off with a win in the second game of the day at Klenk Park. Alma got on the board early with a triple from Kauffold that sent Robinson home to take a 1-0 lead. Olivet would rebuttal in the third inning with five runs to put the Scots trailing. In the bottom of the third, Robinson would get on base by being hit by a pitch and would steal second to put him into scoring position. Carnicom then blasted a ball over the left field wall for a two-run shot and adding to his season record in RBIs. Kauffold would follow behind with a walk and Stephen McGlade (Pinckney, Mich.) would single to right field. Nyswaner took advantage of the situation again and doubled to right field sending both runners home and tying the game at 5-5. Alma would be held in check the rest of the day as Olivet would add five more runs and split the day with the Scots.
Alma will finish out the regular season on Sunday, May 8, as they travel to Olivet to finish the three-game series. Opening pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
