Scots drop two on the road to Hornets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team traveled to southwest Michigan to take on the Kalamazoo College Hornets. The Scots competed in a doubleheader but lost both games by final scores of 4-2 and 8-3.

Kalamazoo jumped out to an early lead in game one by scoring two runs in the first and a solo run in the second to take a 3-0 lead. In the top of the third inning, Ethan Krafft (Canton, Mich.) placed one down the right field line collecting a base hit. A couple batters later, Kevin Tuttle (Woodhaven, Mich.) singled to left center and Krafft advanced to third. Stephen McGlade (Pinckney, Mich.) drew a walk to load the bases for Alma. During the next at-bat, all runners would advance forward on a wild pitch and Krafft would score the first run for the Scots.

In the fifth inning, Krafft again collected a base hit and would advance to second on a throwing error, putting himself into scoring position. Dalton D'Alexander (Canton, Mich.) followed behind with a bunt and beat the throw to first which put runners on the corners for Alma. Tuttle then flew out to left field which allowed Krafft to tag up and cross home plate, cutting the Hornets lead to one. Kalamazoo would add an additional run in the sixth and Alma would run out of time in the seven-inning game and drop the first game of the day.

Alma looked to rebound in game two and steal a win in the final game of the series. In the top of the first inning, leading off the Scots, Tuttle doubled down the left field line. Avery Carnicom (Woodhaven, Mich.) and Cooper Kauffold (Sebewaing, Mich.) would each draw a walk and load the bases. Mac Hawley took the plate and doubled down the right field line scoring Tuttle and Carnicom, while Kauffold advanced to third. Kauffold would score while Hawley advanced to third on a passed ball and Alma would take a 3-0 lead. Kalamazoo's defense proved to be a well-oiled machine and kept the Scots off the board the rest of the game. Kalamazoo would take game two and the season series over Alma.

Alma will now head home and host Olivet College on Saturday, May 7 for a doubleheader. The start times for the games are 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
