ADRIAN, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team closed out the weekend series against the Adrian Bulldogs on Saturday, April 30. The Scots dropped both games on the day by final scores of 7-5 and 8-6.
For the first game, Alma got on the board early. Batting second, Stephen McGlade (Pinckney, Mich.) hit a triple to left center to put himself into scoring position. Joshua Robinson (Dewitt, Mich.) sent him home on a sacrifice fly out to center field after tagging up at third. Adrian responded with three of their own runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. Both teams held each other scoreless until the top of the sixth where Alma would regain the lead from the Bulldogs.
Beginning the scoring in the sixth, Robinson would be walked, and Avery Carnicom (Woodhaven, Mich.) singled to left field. Cooper Kauffold (Sebewaing, Mich.) would load the bases for Alma after being hit by a pitch. Pinch hitting, Wyatt Nyswaner (Clio, Mich.) took advantage of his opportunity and doubled to right field which scored Carnicom and Robinson, leaving runners on second and third. Mac Hawley (Brooklyn, Mich.) grounded out to second but allowed Kauffold to score and give the Scots a 4-3 lead. Adrian added one run in the sixth and another run in the seventh to regain the lead, 6-4. In the eighth inning, Carnicom showed his power at the plate and hit a homerun over the left field wall to put Alma down one. Adrian again added an additional run on the eighth and Alma would fall short in game one to the Bulldogs.
In the second game of the day, again Alma found themselves on the board in the first inning. Both Robinson and Carnicom singled in their first at-bats. Kauffold would follow the trend and single up the middle and score Robinson, giving Alma a 1-0 lead. Alma added to their lead in the third starting with a double from Kevin Tuttle (Woodhaven, Mich.). Tuttle then advanced to third on a fly out. Robinson also flew out, but Tuttle again tagged up and crossed Homeplate giving Alma some cushion with a 2-0 lead. Adrian would add three runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 6-2 lead.
In the sixth inning, Kauffold singled to center field. Wyatt Steensma (Mattawan, Mich.) pinch ran for Kauffold and advanced to second on a passed ball. Jacob Cornman (Birch Run, Mich.) would also single and allow Steensma to score at home. Following Cornman, Ian Hart (Brighton, Mich.) timed a ball up and sent it over the left filed wall for a two-run homer and put the Scots down one. The Bulldogs would add two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-5 lead. In the seventh inning, the new record holder for most career doubles, Joshua Robinson added to his total with another double to left field. Hawley then singled and sent Robinson home to put Alma down two, which would ultimately be the final score.
Another record was broken over the weekend for the Alma baseball program. Avery Carnicom now holds the record for the most single season RBI with 41 and still counting.
The baseball team will now have a day off before taking on the Calvin Knights at Klenk Park on Monday, May 2. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
