Box Score
DETROIT, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team hosted the Eastern Michigan University Eagles under the lights at Comerica Park on Wednesday, April 27. The Scots fell to the Division I Eagles by a final score of 5-1.
The game started off as a pitcher's duel as hits were a premium for both sides. Tyler Johnson (Lexington, Mich.) was the starting pitcher for the Scots, letting up zero hits and recorded one strikeout through two innings. In the top of the second inning, after drawing a walk, EMU's Shane Easter tried to steal second, but Cooper Kauffold (Sebewaing, Mich.) caught him running and threw him out to end the inning and keep Alma out of trouble. EMU would strike first in the top of the third with a solo homerun to take a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, the Eagles drove in another run with a single to take a 2-0 lead over Alma.
In the middle frames, Tyler Kapa (Wateford, Mich.) took the mound for the Scots and held the Eagles to zero hits and recorded five strikeouts to keep Alma just a couple runs back. In the seventh inning, EMU added three runs on three hits to increase their lead to 5-0. Alma looked to respond in the bottom of the inning, starting with a single to left field from Dalton D'Alexander (Canton, Mich.). Kevin Tuttle (Woodhaven, Mich.) followed behind D'Alexander with a single down the right field line, putting runners on first and third. Kauffold put the bat on the ball and grounded out to shortstop but advanced D'Alexander home and put the Scots on the board at Comerica Park. Kauffold recorded the only RBI of the night for Alma.
Trevor Wregglesworth (Onaway, Mich.) and Ty Sobczak (Petosky, Mich.) would close out the night on the mound for the Scots and record one strikeout and allow only two hits.
Here is what Coach Jason Crain had to say about the evening:
"It was a fun game to have the opportunity to come down here and play against a great Division I program in Eastern Michigan who is on the up swing and have been playing some pretty good baseball. We were just looking for our guys to compete in moments and build on some of the positive things they have been doing recently and they certainly did that tonight. A couple mishaps costed us some runs early which opened up the game a little bit, but a 5-1 ballgame is a pretty good and I am proud of our guys for competing in the moments like they did."
The Scots will play EMU at Comerica Park again next season as the visitors in a several year series in the MLB stadium.
Alma will return to conference play on Friday, April 29, as the host the Bulldogs of Adrian College at Klenk Park. First pitch for the conference matchup is at 4:00 p.m.
