Scots drop first game to Hornets

Box Score

ALMA, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team hosted MIAA foe Kalamazoo College on Friday, April 22, at Klenk Park. The Scots fell to the Hornets by a final score of 16-5.

Kalamazoo came off the buses ready to swing the bats and Alma found themselves down early as the Hornets scored seven unanswered runs in the first three innings. In the bottom of the third, the Scots got on base with Nolan Chillcut (Woodhaven, Mich.) being hit by a pitch. Kevin Tuttle (Woodhaven, Mich.) then singled and both runners advanced forward on a wild pitch. Cooper Kauffold (Sebewaing, Mich.) stayed patient at the plate and drew a walk to load the bases for the Scots. Joshua Robinson (Dewitt, Mich.) took advantage of the situation knocked a pitch into the outfield for an RBI single and Chillcut scored. With the bases still juiced, Avery Carnicom (Woodhaven, Mich.) flew out to right field for a sacrifice fly and Tuttle would tag up and score to make the score, 7-2.

Kalamazoo would keep the offense rolling and add nine more runs from the fourth inning to the seventh. Alma responded with their own offense in the bottom of the seventh as they needed a comeback. The offense started with a double from Ethan Krafft (Canton, Mich.) to right field. Taha Ebrahim (Ann Arbor, Mich.) followed behind with a pitch striking him and advanced to first base. Returning to the top of the order, Tuttle singled to right field and loaded the bases for Alma once again. Staying patient at the plate again, Kauffold drew another walk and Krafft crossed home plate to add another run for the Scots. Alma would add another run on a wild pitch which allowed for all runners to advance, and Ebrahim would cross home plate. Carnicom added an RBI on a groundout to shortstop allowing for Tuttle to cross home, making the score 16-5. Alma's comeback would end with a flyout to left field.

Carnicom (2), Kauffold, and Robinson recorded the RBIs for the Scots.

Alma will finish the series against the Hornets on Tuesday, May 3, after postponement due to weather. The Scots next matchup will be against the Eastern Michigan University Eagles at Comerica Park on Wednesday, April 27, at 7:00 p.m.
