ANGOLA, Ind. – The Alma College baseball team traveled to Indiana on Friday, April 15, to take on Trine University in the first of a three-game series. The Scots took game one by a final score of 8-5.
Joshua Robinson (Dewitt, Mich.) got the hitting started for Alma with a double in the top of the first. Next up to bat, Avery Carnicom (Woodhaven, Mich.) connected with a pitch to send it over the left center field wall for a two-run homerun. Following behind, Jacob Cornman (Birch Run, Mich.) doubled to left center putting him into scoring position. Ian Hart (Brighton, Mich.) singled to the left side which allowed Cornman to score, giving the Scots a 3-0 lead. Trine answered back in the bottom of the second inning with one run, making the score 3-1.
In the top of the fifth, Cooper Kauffold (Sebewaing, Mich.) doubled to center field and Robinson drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Jacob Cornman then singled to shortstop, Robinson reached third by a throwing error and Kauffold scored. Hart would ground out to shortstop and Robinson would score while Cornman advanced to second. Alma left the top of the fifth inning with a 5-1 lead. Trine responded with one run in the bottom of the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, Dalton D'Alexander (Canton, Mich.) doubled to get the Scots rolling. Kevin Tuttle (Woodhaven, Mich.) then reached first by an error and D'Alexander advanced to third. Kauffold would send D'Alexander across home plate with a single to second base and would advance to second on an error, putting runners on second and third. Robinson was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Carnicom would add another hit with a single to center field scoring two runs and giving Alma a 8-2 lead. Trine added two runs in the bottom of the sixth and one run in the eighth, but Alma would leave Indiana with a victory and a 1-0 series lead over the Thunder.
The Alma Pitching staff recorded seven total strikeouts and only allowed three earned runs. Four Scots recorded doubles on the day and Carnicom (4), Hart (2), and Kauffold each collected RBIs.
Alma will complete the regular season series on Saturday, April 16, when they the Thunder in a doubleheader at Klenk Park. Start times for the games are 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
