Box Score
HOLLAND, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team traveled to Hope College to take on the Flying Dutchmen on Monday, April 11. Alma would drop the series finale by a final score of 14-3.
Hope opened the game with eight runs scored in the first three innings to take an 8-0 lead. Alma showed signs of a comeback in the fourth inning after Avery Carnicom (Woodhaven, Mich.) was walked and Cooper Kauffold (Sebewaing, Mich.) singled to right field, putting two runners on. Stephen McGlade (Pinckney, Mich.) then flew out to center field but allowed both runners to advance to scoring positions. Jacob Cornman (Birch Run, Mich.) took advantage of the situation at hand and connected with a pitch, hitting a single to right field and allowing both runners to score, making it 8-2.
Hope added six more runs in the fifth and sixth innings, increasing their lead to 14-2. Needing some late game heroics, Alma looked to fight back against the Flying Dutchmen and maybe steal another game as they did earlier in the season. In the top of the seventh, Ethan Krafft (Canton, Mich.) led off the Scots with a single to center field. Dalton D'Alexander (Canton, Mich.) was hit by a pitch and took first base, moving Krafft to second. Joshua Robinson (Dewitt, Mich.) was also hit by a pitch which loaded the bases for the Scots. Carnicom followed behind and hit a sacrifice fly to left field and allowed one runner to score. Hope would collect the last out needed and finish the game following the sac fly.
The two Scots collecting RBIs during the game were Carnicom and Cornman. Alma's pitching staff recorded nine strikeouts, five of them coming from Cam Jones (Farmington Hills, Mich.).
The Scots will be back in action when they face the Calvin University Knights on Wednesday, April 13 at Klenk Park. First pitch is at 4:00 p.m.
