ALMA, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team finished their weekend series against the Albion College Britons on Sunday, April 10. The Scots split the two games on the day, winning 9-3 and losing 4-2.
To start the day, Albion got on the board first with one run in the top of the first to take the lead. Alma would be held off the board until the fourth inning where they would tie the game. To start the fourth, Ian Hart (Brighton, Mich.) singled to center to get on base for the Scots. Stephen McGlade (Pinckney, Mich.) would follow behind with a double to fight field to put runners into scoring position. Mac Hawley (Brooklyn, Mich.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field allowing for Hart to score and even up the game.
The Scots would add another run in the fifth when Kevin Tuttle (Woodhaven, Mich.) singled with Dalton D'Alexander (Canton, Mich.) on third, which allowed him to cross home plate. Albion would regain the lead in the sixth, scoring two runs, making the score 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, McGlade singled to center field and advanced to second on a sacrifice ground out by Hawley. D'Alexander would single to right field and McGlade scored to tie the game at three apiece.
Leading off in the bottom of the seventh, Tuttle would take a pitch over the left field wall for a solo home run and a 4-3 Alma lead. Batting next, Joshua Robinson (Dewitt, Mich.) singled to center field and Avery Carnicom (Woodhaven, Mich.) drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Both runners would advance on a Sacrifice out by Hart. McGlade also sacrifice flew out to center field but Robinson would score to take a 5-3 lead.
In the eighth, with runners on the corners, Robinson would time a pitch perfectly and take it over the left field wall for a three-run homerun and an 8-3 Alma lead. The Scots would score their final run of the game with the bases loaded and Carnicom scoring from third on a wild pitch.
Ty Sobczak (Petoskey, Mich.) recorded the win for the Scots while collecting four strikeouts. Jacob Wanous (Midland, Mich.) collected five strikeouts. Alma RBIs came from Robinson (3), Tuttle (2), McGlade, Hawley, and D'Alexander.
After a short break, the teams met for a third and final time to close out the series. Both teams were held off the board until the fourth inning when Albion broke through to take a 1-0 lead.
The Britons would add another run in the fifth to make the score 2-0. In the bottom of the fifth, D'Alexander reached first on a walk. Robinson then doubled to center field and put runners onto second and third. Carnicom hit a sacrifice fly to left field allowing for D'Alexander to score and cut the Britons lead in half.
Albion added another run in the seventh to take a two-run lead again.
In the eighth, McGlade drew a walk to reach first. Jacob Cornman (Birch Run, Mich.) singled to left field and put runners on the corners for Alma. Nolan Chillcut (Woodhaven, Mich.) grounded out third base and McGlade scored to put Alma down one. The Scots would ultimately fall short and lose the second game of the day to Albion.
The Alma pitching staff recorded 11 total strikeouts in the second game, six of them coming from Tyler Kapa (Waterford, Mich.).
The Scots play their next game on Monday, April 11, at Hope College to take on the Flying Dutchman. The game is slated for a 4:00p.m. start time.
