Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Alma College baseball team collected their first win on their Tennessee road trip on Saturday, Feb. 26, beating the University of Chicago (Ill.), 9-6. The Scots move to 2-5 on the season.
The Scots got the scoring started for the day in the bottom of the inning. Avery Carnicom reached first base on a fielder's choice and collected an RBI as Kevin Tuttle crossed home plate to make the score 1-0. The following at-bat, Cooper Kauffold reached first base on a fielder's choice, while Nolan Chillcut made it home and made the score 2-0 in favor of Alma.
The Maroons would tie the game in the third inning as the Scots bats' quieted down during the middle innings. The Maroons scored another run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead over the Scots.
In the bottom of the fifth, Alma loaded the bases for Joshua Robinson, who doubled to right-centerfield and scored everyone on base, putting the Scots down by only one.
Leading off the bottom of the sixth, Kauffold doubled to left center. Following behind, Mac Hawley reached first on a throwing error, allowing Kauffold to score and the Scots to tie the game. Later in the inning, Tuttle hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Hawley to score.
The Scots weren't finished, though, as Chillcut would reach first on a single up the middle, which would allow the base runners to advance, and Jacob Cornman to score. Robinson followed behind, hitting a single and allowing Taha Ebrahim to score for the Scots, making the score 9-6.
Alma's pitching would not allow another hit for the Maroons and Alma would come out victorious on a cold morning in Memphis.
Kauffold and Cornman recorded a steal each for the Scots, while Tuttle, Chillcut, Robinson, Carnicom, and Kauffold all recorded RBIs. Five pitchers recorded a team total of eight strikeouts for Alma, while Nick Kucharski recorded his first win (1-0) and Ty Sobczak collected his second save on the season.
The Scots will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 27, as they play University of Chicago (Ill.) again and a final game against Rhodes College before heading back to Michigan. The first game starts at 10:30 a.m. and the second game starts at 2 p.m.
