Scots bats are hot, but fall to Cleary in extras

Howell, Mich. – The Alma College baseball team traveled down 127 for a midday matchup against the Cleary University Cougars on Tuesday, March 15. The Scots fell to the Cougars by a final score of 13-12 in ten innings. 

Both teams started the game with strong defense, not allowing any runs until the third inning when Cleary scored three runs to take the lead. Alma would respond in the fourth inning, starting off with Avery Carnicom getting on base after a walk. Cooper Kauffold followed behind with a single to center field. Mac Hawley would be hit by a pitch and ultimately load the bases for the Scots. Ethan Krafft singled with the bases loaded sending Carnicom and Kauffold home. In the next at bat, Taha Ebrahim also singled, and Hawley crossed home plate to tie the game for Alma. Several batters later After Kevin Tuttle drew a walk, Joshua Robinson also walked with the bases loaded and Krafft would score to take the lead. Batting next, Carnicom would also be walked, and another run would score for Alma. After the walks, Kauffold singled to right field allowing Robinson and Tuttle to score. Keeping the hits rolling, Hawley singled to left field and would advance to second on the throw, allowing for Carnicom to score. Nolan Chillcut would reach first on an error and Kauffold would reach home making the score 9-3 for Alma. 

Cleary in the fifth and sixth inning would score seven runs to regain the lead, 10-9. In the top of the seventh, with runners on first and second, Tony Smith singled to center field and Krafft rounded third and scored for the Scots to tie the game at ten apiece. In the eighth inning with the bases loaded, Krafft would single to right field and Mitch Foley crossed home making the score 11-10 in favor of the Scots. The Cougars added two additional runs in the bottom of the eighth, taking a 12-11 lead over Alma. In the ninth, Robinson would draw a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kauffold singled to second base and Robinson scored tying the game, 12-12. Alma did not score in the top of the tenth, and Cleary knocked home a run taking the win in extras. 

Recording the only double for the Scots was Tuttle. Alma batters collecting RBIs would be Kauffold (3), Krafft (3), Smith, Robinson, Carnicom, Hawley, and Chillcut. The Alma pitching staff recorded seven total strikeouts. 

Alma's next game is a doubleheader against Wittenberg on Saturday, March 19, with the first game starting at 12:00 p.m. and the second game at 3:00 p.m. The Scots will play an additional game on Sunday, March 20, at 12:00 p.m. to close out the series.
