Box Score 2 MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Alma College baseball team closed out its road trip by splitting the final day with a loss to University of Chicago (Ill.), 9-8, and a win against Rhodes College, 7-5, in 10 innings.
The Scots started the scoring off with a single by Joshua Robinson, which sent Kevin Tuttle across home plate to put Alma on the board. In the second inning, Ethan Krafft hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Mac Hawley to score and put Alma up two. Robinson hit a solo home run in the third inning to put the Scots up, 3-0. Later in the inning, Cooper Kauffold would score after a fielding error allowed Stephen McGlade to reach first.
Alma shut out the Maroons until the fifth inning, when Chicago scored eight runs and regained the lead. Chicago scored an additional run in the sixth to extend its lead to 9-4. The Scots would not back down though, and in the top of the seventh, Robinson hit another solo home run. Later in the seventh, Hawley hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Avery Carnicom to score and whittle the Maroons' lead to three. In the eighth, Carnicom would hit it down the infield line and reach second base, knocking in Robinson and Tuttle to add two more runs, making the score 9-8. Ultimately Alma would not complete the comeback and would drop the morning game to the Maroons.
Alma would be back in action within an hour and would now look for revenge against Rhodes College in its final game of the trip.
Alma would open the scoring in the third, when Carnicom doubled down the line allowing Tuttle and Wyatt Nyswaner to score, putting the Scots up 2-0. Carnicom came up to bat in the fifth and grounded out to short, but the runners would advance and Nyswaner scored. In the sixth, Nyswaner hit a single to right, allowing Padyn Kesselring to score and extend the lead to 4-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, Rhodes would score two runs to cut into the lead. In the final inning of the game, Rhodes scored two runs with two outs to take the game to extra innings. Alma would ultimately score three runs in the top of the 10th and would hold Rhodes to only one run, allowing the Scots to finish the trip with a win.
Trevor Wregglesworth recorded three strikeouts for the Scots through five innings pitched. Carnicom (3), Jacob Cornman, Dalton D'Alexander, Kauffold, Nyswaner all recorded RBIs for Alma. Kevin Tuttle recorded the only stolen base for the Scots.
Alma will be back in action when they travel to Indianapolis, Indiana to take on Franklin College (Ind.). The games will be played at Bishop Chatard High School. The first doubleheader takes place on Saturday, March 12, at noon. The Scots will finish the series on Sunday, March 13.
