Box Score 2 SHREVEPORT, La. — The Alma College baseball team started its season with a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 20. Alma won its first game against Centenary College, 7-5, and dropped the second game, 14-2.
Alma started its season with some hot bats as Joshua Robinson hit a two-run home run in his first at-bat of the season. Following Robinson, Alma scored one run in the second and two runs in the third from sacrifice flies and an error.
Tyler Johnson started on the mound for the Scots and pitched six innings, only allowing three hits and one run.
The game slowed down during the middle innings, but Alma put another run on the board in the eighth when Avery Carnicom scored off an error. The Scots' defense was tested in the bottom of the eighth when Centenary put four runs on the board to make the score 6-5. But a solo home run from Robinson in the ninth, his second of the game, provided insurance for the Scots and Ty Sobczak came on in relief to close the game out in Alma's favor.
Five players had multiple hits for the Scots and Alma had a collective 13 hits as a team.
Coming off the first-game win, the Scots momentarily picked up where they left off offensively as Carnicom took one over the wall for a two-run home run. Centenary scored two runs of their own to tie the game at two going into the second inning. From there, it was all Centenary, and Alma lost, 14-2.
Alma will play Centenary on Monday, Feb. 21, in another doubleheader matchup. The first game begins at 4 p.m.
